Israeli Perspectives on the New Middle East Report on the 12th Herzliya Conference, 30 January – 2 February 2012 A conference report by CES Deputy Director and Head of Research Roland Freudenstein who participated in the annual Herzliya Conference in Israel, this year titled “In the Eye of Storms”. The report gives a good overview of today’s most important security issues from an Israeli perspective.

The New Middle East: Rising to the challenge and sticking to our values The debate about how to assess the unfolding events in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has only just begun. Nevertheless, some constants of this debate are already visible: Is this more like ‘89 (Central and Eastern Europe), or ‘79 (Iran)? How much political influence is the West really losing? Who and what are the driving factors behind these revolts? What kind of political systems will emerge? How will this influence regional conflicts, such as Israel-Palestine, or the situation in Iran?
