WHAT’S UP UNION? Europe 2020

The first open café event ”What’s Up Union” was organised in connection with a Via Politica event at the centre of Helsinki, Narinkkatori square, on Saturday, 16th of April, day before the general election in Finland.

The event was advertised in the local newspaper Metro as well as through Toivo website and email posting.

The café tent with CES/Toivo stand was well attended; approximately 250 people popped in. The number of people passing the area exceeded 500 during the exposition. There was also a stage in the middle of the square where think tanks could host a microseminar of 30-40 minutes each; CES/Toivo hosted a debate on Europe. The panelists were Mr. Arto Aniluoto, director of European Movement in Finland, and Ms. Berit Teeäär, International Secretary of IRL in Estonia. The panelists discussed, apart from the current affairs, the differences between Estonia and Finland in regard to European Union. One of the points raised was the lack of historical awareness.

The publication “What’s Up EU” was firstly distributed at the Narinkkatori Square event.

The second What’s Up Union café event was organized in Tampere, Finland, in a café in the city centre on Monday morning, 13th of June. The original idea was to connect the event with the new government programme, but due to the challenging and delayed government negotiations the event concentrated more on the general atmosphere in Europe with the crisis in Greece at hand. The panel was co-chaired by Chief Editor Jouko Jokinen from Aamulehti, local newspaper, and director Markku Pyykkölä from Toivo Think Tank. Panelists were all Kokoomus Members of Parliament from the region, Mr. Harri Jaskari, Ms. Sofia Vikman and Mr. Pauli Kiuru. They discussed the future role of the EU in Europe; will the crisis and the means to counter it bring the Union closer to a federal state? The panelists also commented on the rising criticism towards bailouts. The conclusion was simply that the times are challenging, even more so for all pro-Europeans.

The event was advertised through social media, Toivo Think Tank website and email posting as well as via the Kokoomus Tampere district office and by the MP’s themselves. There were approximately 20-25 people present.

The third What’s Up Union café event will be organized in Helsinki in late August/early September with MEP’s present. The publication will be distributed even there, as the themes are still as topical as in April.
